A Bluewater Bay Novel

Lucas Wilder's best friend is a traitor. First, Audrey moved back to their hick-infested hometown, Bluewater Bay, and now she's marrying a local. His own brother, in fact. And as her man of honor, Lucas gets coerced into returning for an extended stay. Although, between his unfaithful ex-boyfriend and his artist's block, going home isn't the worst thing that could happen. Even if the best man is Gabriel Savage, Lucas's first crush, first hookup, and first heartbreak.

The only reason Gabe hasn't been waiting for Lucas to return to Bluewater Bay is because he never thought it'd happen. Not that it matters now that Lucas is back - Gabe's still a logger who's never been anywhere (Canada doesn't count), and Lucas is now a famous sculptor who's been everywhere twice. Plus, there's that shared past.

When Audrey asks Lucas to make her wedding favors, the only place to set up a kiln is at Gabe's tree farm. Soon, they pick up where they left off 12 years before, then blow past it, discovering why neither of them forgot the other. Now they have to choose how much of their history they'll repeat, and what future they'll make together.

Wedding Favors Bluewater Bay Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Anne Tenino Nick J Russo Riptide Publishing Books

This book is the first I read in this series and I really liked it. These two have years with of history and so major unfinished business. So when Lucas comes back to town he is not really sure what to so next. Gabe has always wanted Lucas but never thought he would stay in Bluewatwer Bay so when he comes back Gabe has a lot of thinking to do......should he go after what he has wanted for the last 12 years or just let out be. When these two get together they give meaning to the word hot. Loved this book.

Wedding Favors Bluewater Bay Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Anne Tenino Nick J Russo Riptide Publishing Books Reviews

Though I wasn't a huge fan of the short story that featured these characters in the Bluewater Bay Valentine's Day collection, I'm very glad I went back to read Lucas and Gabe's novel when I realized I'd missed it. I didn't have the patience for either character when they were teenagers. As adults, I still don't have much patience for their angst, but they make up for it by being slightly more adorable.

This is very much a story of two small-town guys and what it's like living in a small town, despite the fact that it's been invaded by Hollywood. The author obviously did her research when it came to both Lucas and Gabe's specialties (sculpture and horsemanship), and their passions for their work (and each other, ahem) flow off the page.

The angst and unwillingness of the characters to properly communicate with each got to be a bit much at times. However, there were plenty of hilarious moments, compliments of the secondary characters, that more than made up for when the guys were being thick-headed and dense.

And, of course, I'm a sucker for a wedding (even if it's not between the heroes).

I definitely hope to check in with these guys to see how they're doing as the series progresses.
This is the follow-up to Helping Hand, one of the short stories in Bluewater Bay 6, in which budding teenage artist Lucas is desperate to escape his hometown and has what appears to be a traumatizing and life-changing sexual experience with his brother's best friend, lumberjack Gabe. I loved that short tale until the ending, not exactly a HEA by any stretch of the imagination.

But in this sequel (which you can read as a stand-alone to that story or the whole series), we are thrown into their lives 12 years later--and what lives they have lived. Like most of Tenino's books, there is much alpha male aggression and guilt and angst of how ginger Gabe is going to resolve the cruel experience he left Lucas with before the latter simply fled town to go to arts college in L.A. Gabe initially comes off as a selfish piece of crap--he's got a lot to learn and get out of the way to get what he really wants and needs but does not know how to do it. There is also the introspective and totally incomprehensible (at times) wussiness that Lucas carries forth on every single page, even when he is convinced he should develop a relationship both he and Gabe have secretly longed for over their years apart, but which each one knows has to end.

The plot which brings them back together is centered around the surprise wedding of Lucas' best friend, Audrey--well, it's a shock to Lucas, who learns that she is to marry his brother, Zach. How this convolutes into a series of funny, and sometimes heart-wrenching, vignettes, is deftly handled by Tenino, who develops at least six characters fully, one of which (Seth) I would personally like to see her spin off into a sequel.

In any case, the bottom line here is that the cover art of this book absolutely, perfectly, defines the way Gabe (left) and Lucas (right) are not only described, but also how the reader comes to understand their personalities and the eventual winding down (or up, as you wish) to a totally relaxing, beautiful, romp through the forests, glens and little places no one knows, of western Washington. Beautiful.
While still funny and sexy like many of Tenino's books, this one had some more serious, beautifully written passages I haven't seen in her work to date. I really loved the MCs. Gabe and Lucas were deep and well-developed characters. They could easily have been cliches (logger and artist) but somehow did not come off as cliches at all. I love how their dialogue and words so excellently reflected their personalities and were kept constant - Gabe never spouted off with flowery words, but remained laconic and terse in his language throughout. So many authors allow their characters to fall "out of character" but Tenino keeps a tight rein on hers, which makes the story so much more effective. The surrounding cast of characters was wonderful too, particularly Audrey and Zach, though I would have enjoyed even more interactions with townspeople, Momma, Gramma, etc, than we had. The sex between Gabe and Lucas as smokin' but even better was the way they SAW each other and understood each other. I really felt their connection. Great read!
